Proper Care

Hey Mel,

I agree with you in asking the patient, but then at the same time when does culture vs proper care cross the line? For example, if there was a life and death situation, should we not provide the care because the patient does not believe in something we are doing or is it our duty to keep them from dying?

Also, when someone is underage and their parent or guardian is making the decision for them, but they might not understand what is going on, should the government (or us) intervene to save this childes life or is it ultimately up to the parents?

P-CITE - November 26, 2007

I also just wanted to say that I agree with the point we were talking about finding a balance between culture and proper care.

* How do you think we should judge the situations to find the proper balance?

Group Questions - November 26, 2007

Hey Everyone,

How did you all like the last P-CITE presentation? I really enjoyed it. I think it was a great eye-opening experience for all of us and I think that if we take what we have learned we can make a better experience for Newcommers.

b) Identify the assest/strengths that you see
- Newcommers filling positions (jobs)
- Meeting people from other cultures
- Ability for them to learn English

c) How does each individual's perspective contribute to your understanding of the issues?
- Wide range of difficulties
- Each culture has a different view on something
- Adaptations

d) What role do you think culture plays in this situation?
- HUGE - two different cultures coming together
- making adaptations
- very critical role
- religion

e) Analyse the issue(s) and possible solution(s)
- Orientation
- Open Door Society
- Care Package
- Don't make people loose their cultural identity
- Host Families
- Different standards for education - How to fulfill them? Re-Training, Courses, etc

f) Discuss perceptions of your own professional contributions to the presentations

Multiculturalism

Hey Melody,

To be able to post you have to follow the link that was emailed to you and get an account.

Anyways, I liked your comment:

" I think communication and interaction with other cultures would help us become
more accepting. Events like Mosaic or a multicultural fair at work are great
ways to help expose people to different cultures. "

But I think the key thing for students is the reflection after these types of events. Without this reflection and discussion students just get the outside view of the culture without the deeper meaning put behind the culture there will be no lasting effects.

I don't know if this will work, but here is the PowerPoint presentation that I did in my Education Social Studies class about Multiculturalism. It talks about different ways of bringing "multiculturalism" into the classroom.

Also, here is a bit of a response to the questions of discussion that was posted on the blog.

1) I think the behaviours of everyone in the skit are "of concern." I think the professionals aren't helping to solve the present problem and are making it almost worse because they are showing that they cannot even work together.

2) I am unsure of what "who owns the problems" is referring to.

3) I think being purely client-centered is creating an environment for the client to feel safe in and being a professional that the client can relate to. I think if you have a safe environment the client is more likely to open up to the real problem and more likely to collaborate to find a solution.

4) I think an inter professional team working collaboratively is taking each professionals different views on situations and finding the pros and cons of each solution and finding a solution that works for the client and for the professional.

These are just a few notes. Let me know if you think you have a different opinion and anything that can be added to make them stronger.

Thanks,

Kristina

An Update!

Hello Team (you are small but mighty right now!)
I have posted some new questions, as well, I have sent a link to all of your team members so that you can 'post' instead of just 'comment'-that way you can navigate through this blog a little easier (and hopefully more will take part!)
One last thing, your facilitator will be around soon-but in the meantime-I'm a good stand in!
Thanks for your time team!

Questions for Discussion

1. What are some of the underlying behaviours of concern.? Whose
behaviours are you making reference to and why do you consider them to
be 'of concern'?

2. Who owns the problems in the vignette and why?

3. What would the dynamics of being purely client centred look like?
Discuss the concept of client centeredness.

4. Given the dynamics you have identified and discussed above, what
would you do and what might be an appropriate response from an
interprofessional team working collaboratively?
